The GALEN
Exam is
meant to provide assurance to the public, including
people living with HIV/AIDS, that a physician
certified by the International Association
of Physicians in AIDS Care (IAPAC) has successfully
completed an evaluation process which includes
an exam designed to assess the knowledge required
to deliver a continuum of HIV/AIDS care, treatment,
and support. The GALEN
Exam is designed in
a multiple-choice best-answer format. A
score of 70% or higher is required to pass
the GALEN Exam. Individuals
who pass the GALEN Exam earn
a Certificate
of Clinical Competence in HIV Medicine.
Earning a Certificate
of Clinical Competence in HIV Medicine marks
the beginning of a two-year certification
maintenance cycle. To maintain their
certification, certified physicians will be
encouraged to participate in continuing education
(CE) activities – including monthly in-service
trainings, grand rounds, lectures, and Internet-based
educational programs – that build upon their
knowledge and skills in the field of HIV medicine.
Re-certification is
required every
two years. Unless otherwise
announced, re-certification will require successfully
passing the GALEN Exam available
within the calendar quarter in which a Certificate
of Clinical Competence in HIV Medicine is
due to expire.
Examinees must register and pay registration fees to take the GALEN Exam. The current discounted fees are $100 (USD) for developing world examinees, and $200 (USD) for developed world examinees. In the event an examinee does not pass the GALEN Exam, these fees are not refundable – however the examinee may retake the exam within a one-month period without paying an additional registration fee.
