CONFERENCE PROGRAM

Conference Structure

The 4th International Conference on HIV Treatment Adherence will provide a forum where the state-of-the-science for HIV treatment adherence research will be presented, discussed, and translated into evidence-based approaches. The 2.5-day program will allow healthcare and human service professionals to examine scientifically sound and practical strategies to enhance adherence to HIV treatment in a variety of domestic and international settings.

New this year, the conference willopen with the dedication of the Gary Reiter, MD and Andrew Kaplan, MD, Memorial Lecture, which honors their contributions to adherence research, practice, and advocacy. The conference program will also include four workshops, a keynote presentation, five plenary presentations, 48 oral abstract presentations, poster displays, informal discussion groups, and an electronic interactive session at the final plenary panel. The world’s foremost researchers, clinicians, and policy experts will be invited to focus on state-of-the-science HIV treatment adherence research, as well as current behavioral and clinical perspectives in practicum.

The conference program content will address aspects of adherence assessment, determinants, promotion, and interventions, facilitators and barriers to adherence (e.g., substance use and its impact), psychiatric/psychological challenges, housing and socioeconomic stability, ethnic disparities, health systems-level issues, and other contextual topics. Additional broad topic areas include engagement and retention in care, patient-provider adherence communication and interactions, and adherence considerations in resource-constrained settings.

Workshop proposals for the 2009 conference and abstract submissions are encouraged in a wide variety of specific domains previously not well represented at this conference, including:
  • Linkage to care and patient retention in care
  • Treatment readiness / preparing patients to initiate antiretroviral therapy
  • Maintaining adherence in treatment-experienced patients
  • Pharmacodynamics (viral load, resistance, immune function)
  • Pharmacokinetics and drug monitoring/sequencing
  • Pharmacoeconomics
  • Adherence measurement and data analysis
  • Adherence research in resource-constrained settings
  • Adherence research in Latin America and the Caribbean, and among various Hispanic/Latino populations
  • Cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic issues in treatment initiation and adherence
  • Adherence in the context of comorbid conditions, (TB, MDV/HCV, drug and alcohol abuse, mental illness, neurocognitive deficits)
  • Adherence in pediatric/child/adolescent populations
  • Adherence interventions (pharmacy-based, clinic-based, community-based, etc.)
  • Healthcare system, staffing, and structural factors in treatment access and adherence
  • Enabling technologies (text messaging, drug packaging, electronic monitoring, software, web)
  • Operations and implementation research on adherence
  • Research/initiatives to promote adherence intervention adoption and dissemination
  • Treatment adherence in relation to HIV prevention/transmission/risk behaivor
  • Adherence to emerging biomedical HIV prevention methods (e.g., PrEP, microbicides)

Abstract contents will be either research-based data using established scientific methods or demonstrate experience and information from individuals or institutions working in the field.

There will be four two-hour workshops that will compliment the main conference. Workshop proposals will be skill based. The Program Committee seeks high quality workshop proposals related to all aspects of adherence, which constitute evidence-based approaches available to date for implementing service-oriented medicine.

Target Audience
The target audience for this conference includes physicians, pharmacists, physicians in training, nurses, psychologists, social workers, AIDS service organization (ASO) staff, case managers, behavioral researchers, social scientists, epidemiologists, advocates, healthcare alliance coordinators, and allied healthcare professionals in the field of HIV medicine.

Conference Goal
Adherence to medical treatment for HIV/AIDS is an essential determinant of treatment success or failure. Yet, we still have much to learn about measurement, determinants, and interventions for HIV treatment adherence — these are complex challenges that require multidisciplinary cooperation among providers, researchers, government agencies, and patients. The goal of this conference is:

To provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of state-of-the-science HIV treatment adherence research, as well as current behavioral and clinical perspectives in practicum. Our ultimate hope is that this dialogue translates into evidence-based implementation of approaches for real world clinical and community settings.

Objectives
After attending this conference, participants will be able to:

  • Identify successes and challenges in HIV treatment adherence in various settings and populations worldwide
  • Understand behavioral and clinical aspects of adherence that reflect a variety of HIV treatment team perspectives (e.g., patients, physicians, pharmacists, nurses, mental health professionals, adherence specialists)
  • Describe the relationships between adherence, pharmacokinetics, viral suppression, and resistance
  • Understand the implications of adherence for HIV prevention and public health
  • Identify adherence assessment tools and interventions that can be integrated into patient care, including in resource-limited settings
