Memorial Lecture Announced

Dr. Jose SzapocznikJose Szapocznik, Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, as well as Associate Dean for Community Development, at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, will deliver the "2009 Gary S. Reiter, MD, and Andrew Kaplan, MD, Memorial Lecture Memorial Lecture" at the 4th International Conference on HIV Treatment Adherence. Entitled, "Ecological Support for Treatment Adherence and Health," the Memorial Lecture will take place from 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm, Sunday, April 5, 2009, at the start of the 4th International Conference on HIV Treatment Adherence.

The Memorial Lecture is dedicated to Gary S. Reiter, MD (1955-2003) and Andrew Kaplan, MD (1959-2006), both of whom were pioneers in the science of HIV treatment adherence. Dr. Reiter championed the issue of adherence to antiretroviral therapy and adapted the work of others to propose the four interlocking elements of adherence success: the patient, the healthcare professional, the health delivery system, and antiretroviral therapy. Dr. Kaplan was a renown researcher whose initial work focused on selections for resistance to a viral protease inhibitor. He eventually expanded his scientific interest into the area of behavioral science, specifically the study of the relationship of adherence to the development of antiretroviral drug resistance.
