Two types of competitive Travel Scholarships are available to facilitate attendance at the 4th International Conference on HIV Treatment Adherence by meritorious applicants:
- International Travel Scholarships for Researchers and Community-Based Providers.
- U.S. Travel Scholarships for Ethnic Minority Researchers and Community-Based Providers.

These travel scholarships will be offered to researchers and community-based providers who are conducting HIV treatment adherence research and/or providing patients/clients with adherence support in countries other than the United States. "Researchers" refers to individuals who either conduct, help to conduct, or intend to conduct HIV adherence research, including students currently enrolled in graduate school, post-doctoral fellowships, or other higher education programs. "Community-based providers" refers to those who provide patients/clients with HIV/AIDS treatment, adherence interventions, and/or other treatment-related support services, including case management and substance abuse treatment.
International scholarship components
The International travel scholarships will cover the cost of economy roundtrip airfare (via a U.S. air carrier), three nights lodging, and waived registration fee. Those individuals approved for funding will receive instructions for how to register for the conference and make travel plans. (Note: Air travel will be arranged and directly paid for by the conference organizers).
International scholarship eligibility
To be eligible for consideration for an International Travel Scholarship, you must:
- Be a citizen or national of a country other than the United States
- Work as a Community-Based Provider addressing adherence issues in your practice, and/or Researcher addressing adherence issues in your research (see definitions of “Researchers” and “Community-Based Providers” provided above).
- Submit a complete application package on-time.
International scholarship submission requirements
To submit an application for an International Scholarship, please provide the following two documents:
- An application with the following components:
- Contact information identifying your name, title/occupation, organization/institution, contact information, and current country of residence.
- Your country of citizenship.
- A brief narrative describing your current work in relationship to adherence issues; what you specifically hope to gain from participation in the conference; and the session(s) of the conference in which you are most interested.
- A short bibliography of any adherence-related research presentations or publications.
- The name and number of the abstract submitted for the 4th International Conference on HIV Treatment Adherence.
- A one-page letter of reference from a professional colleague who can comment on your work and qualifications.
Scholarship applications must be submitted online no later than December 1, 2009. Applicants will be notified of a decision by February 1, 2009.
International scholarship selections
International Travel Scholarship applications will be reviewed by members of the Conference Program Committee. In selecting scholarship recipients, priority will be given to:
- Individuals who are involved in the conduct of HIV adherence research (or who demonstrate a clear intention to conduct HIV adherence research).
- Providers likely to implement adherence interventions in their HIV treatment work, and/or who plan to communicate knowledge gained at the conference to their colleagues.
- Researchers/providers who are working in resource-limited countries and/or settings.
- Individuals who have submitted abstracts to the conference (as lead-authors or co-authors).
We additionally expect to select a set of International scholars that will be representative of various geographic regions affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Those individuals approved for scholarships will receive instructions about how to register for the conference and make travel plans.
These travel scholarships will be offered to U.S.-based researchers and community-based providers of racial/ethnic origins that are often underrepresented in the HIV/AIDS clinical and scientific community. "Researchers" refers to individuals who either conduct, help to conduct, or intend to conduct HIV adherence research, including students currently enrolled in graduate school, post-doctoral fellowships, or other higher education programs. "Community-based providers" refers to those who provide patients/clients with HIV/AIDS treatment, adherence interventions, and/or other treatment-related support services, including case management and substance abuse treatment.

The U.S travel scholarships will cover the cost of domestic economy roundtrip airfare (or ground travel, if appropriate), three nights lodging, and waived registration fee. Those individuals approved for funding will receive instructions for how to register for the conference and make travel plans. (Note: Air and ground travel will be arranged and directly paid for by the conference organizers).
U.S. scholarship eligibility
To be eligible for a U.S. Travel Scholarship, you must be:
- Be a U.S. citizen or Resident Alien with a Green Card
- Identify as having one of the following racial/ethnic origins: Hispanic/Latino, Black/African American, American Indian/ Native Alaskan, Asian/Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian.
- Submit a complete application package on-time.
